Workers who suffer injuries due to adverse weather conditions during this month’s persistent monsoon rains may be eligible for benefits and support services, according to the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).
Employees’ Compensation Program Coverage and Income Replacement
Workers covered by the Employees’ Compensation Program of the Employees’ Compensation Commission (ECC) are eligible to receive benefits, including income replacement. The department explains that this aid acts as monetary support replacing lost wages for staff members who cannot temporarily show up for work because of occupation-related illnesses or injuries, giving them time to completely recover before getting back on the job.
Transit incidents are included under this protection framework. ECC Executive Director Kaima Via Velasquez stated that going to work and coming home from work is already covered by the Employees’ Compensation (EC) Program. Employees who get into an accident while heading to work, such as slipping on a wet street or falling into an open manhole, are covered by EC.
Medical Reimbursements and Claim Procedures
Workers suffering from job-related injuries may also receive medical reimbursements covering up to 60 percent of their treatment and doctor consultation expenses, as reported by DOLE. To secure these funds, claimants must submit hospital and medical receipts through specific state agencies. Private sector employees file their claims via the Social Security System (SSS), while government workers process theirs through the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS).
When an accident occurs off-site or during a worker’s daily commute, the individual must provide valid documentation of the incident to the SSS or GSIS to establish eligibility for the benefits.
Administrative Protections and Attendance Guidelines
Earlier guidance from DOLE emphasized that workers who choose not to show up or cannot make it to work due to severe weather and comparable circumstances must be spared from any disciplinary penalties. Furthermore, the administration pointed out that personnel must complete a minimum of six working hours to qualify for their complete daily compensation. Additionally, employers may provide extra incentives or benefits to staff members who report to work during adverse weather conditions to help ease their burden.
