Article:

Canada has officially recognized Edmundo González Urrutia as the president-elect of Venezuela, following the controversial elections held on July 28. The nation’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mélanie Joly, made this announcement via her Twitter account, affirming Canada’s support for those fighting to uphold the Venezuelan people’s will.

In a conversation with opposition leader María Corina Machado, Joly reiterated Canada’s commitment to the Venezuelan people and their democratic rights. "Canada recognizes that Edmundo González Urrutia won the elections of July 28 and is the president-elect of Venezuela," she declared.

This recognition comes a day before Nicolás Maduro is set to commence a new term as Venezuela’s president, with the opposition alleging election fraud. Earlier, in December 2024, Canada had imposed sanctions on the president of Venezuela’s Supreme Tribunal of Justice (TSJ), Caryslia Rodríguez Rodríguez, and four other high-ranking officials for their role in suppressing democracy in the country.
