Italian courts have authorized the extradition of Dave “Pik” Turmel to Canada, nearly a year after his arrest in Rome.
Extradition Process Underway
Turmel, who was suspected of being the leader of the Blood Family Mafia (BFM) at the time of his arrest, has 15 days to appeal the extradition decision. He was apprehended in Italy in March of last year by Italian authorities working with the Quebec City police service (SPVQ).
The SPVQ had been seeking Turmel since July 24, 2023, and Canada-wide arrest warrants were issued. He faces numerous criminal charges, including drug trafficking, conspiracy, and assault with a weapon causing bodily harm, and is also suspected of involvement in other crimes in Quebec.
What Happens Next?
Even if Turmel does not appeal the extradition, his return to Canada may be delayed. Quebec police officers must travel to Italy to escort him back, after which the judicial process will begin. According to criminal defence lawyer Steven Slimovitch, “As soon as the plane lands, Mr. Turmel will be placed under arrest again because he will be on Canadian soil,” and will then “follow the same process as any Canadian accused.”
Roobens Denis, 31, described as Turmel’s right-hand man, was arrested in Portugal last year after being sought by Quebec City police for seven months. Denis has already been sentenced to 42 months in prison.
