La Quiaca, Argentina – In a complex operation involving multiple jurisdictions, authorities have dismantled an illicit gold mining operation led by a clan family in the mountainous region of Jujuy, Argentina. The group had been illegally extracting gold at altitudes over 4,000 meters for approximately two years.

The crackdown, spanning across La Quiaca, Abra Pampa, Orosmayo, Liviara, and a remote mountainous area, resulted in the detention of twelve individuals. High-end vehicles, heavy machinery, and other evidence pointing to significant investment in the criminal structure were seized during the raids.

"The camp consisted of brick, cement, and sheet-metal buildings with rooms and a garage for storing Toyota Hilux and Volkswagen Amarok pickups. They also had a generator and internet access. We believe they smuggled the gold out on weekends," stated Alberto Mendivil, the prosecutor in charge of the case during a press conference.

Investigators suspect that the family switched from artisanal gold extraction to an industrial-scale operation, utilizing advanced logistical resources. The group is believed to have diverted water from a nearby creek, exacerbating the environmental impact of their activities.

Sources close to the investigation estimate the value of the operation at around 60 million pesos, with no legitimate source of funds identified. This raises suspicions of money laundering. Furthermore, the origin of the vehicles and machinery, all from the same company, is under scrutiny.

Those arrested have been charged with conspiracy, theft, disobedience, water diversion, and violating mining regulations. The gold was found in the form of nuggets. Law enforcement officials, including the Special Police Operations Corps (CEOP), Infantry Corps, Provincial Agency for Complex Crimes (APDC), and the La Quiaca Investigations Brigade, participated in the operation.

Authorities are now exploring potential national and international connections to the clan family’s operation. "This case is of considerable magnitude due to the impact on natural resources and the sophistication with which they operated in such a harsh environment," Mendivil emphasized.
