Extraordinary in education

Estevan Chavez, 11, attending fifth grade at Piñon Elementary School, will join students nationwide this summer at the Junior National Young Leaders Conference in Washington, DC, the city of Santa Fe announced in a press release.

The conference will allow students to explore their interests in science, technology, engineering and mathematics and experience learning beyond the classroom. Estevan was nominated for the program by his third-grade teacher at the Santo Niño Regional Catholic School. He participated in a similar program in summer 2018 in Denver.

Marja C. Graham Los Alamos was named on the President’s List for autumn 2019 at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

Landon Burk of Los Alamos, a freshman specialist in electrical engineering at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, was named on the list of deans for the fall semester 2019.

A team of Los Alamos High School students has won the regional competition for the National Science Bowl 2020 and will compete in the national finals this spring in Washington, DC, the United States Department of Energy announced.

The Institute of American Indian Arts called Derek Santos as a student of the year 2020.

Santos, registered in the Oglala Sioux Tribe, is a specialist in the arts of study with an average of 4.0 points. He will receive a scholarship from the American Indian College Fund and will be recognized at a March banquet in Albuquerque.

After graduation, Santos plans to return to his reservation in Pine Ridge, S.D., and will teach art at Oglala Lakota College.

Finley Miller Santa Fe is among the university students of Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois, who have been nominated on the Dean’s List for the fall semester 2019.

Lex Morris-Wright is Ezri Horne of Santa Fe e Liam Devlin of Los Alamos have been nominated on the Dean’s List of Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts, for the fall semester 2019.
