Born on March 9, 1981, in Coral Springs, Florida, Gilbert attended J. P. Taravella High School before leaving after New Found Glory signed a recording contract. He helped found the group in 1997 and served as their guitarist across eleven studio albums. Their debut record, Nothing Gold Can Stay, was released in 1999, while their final album, titled Listen Up!, came out in February.
Beyond his work with New Found Glory, Gilbert maintained a presence in heavy music. He fronted the band International Superheroes of Hardcore and served as the vocalist for Shai Hulud during two separate stints from 1995 to 1998 and again from 2012 to 2013.
