Chain Car Crash on Yambol-Kukurevo Road; No Injuries Reported

A chain collision involving eight vehicles occurred this morning on the road between Yambol and the nearby village of Kukurevo. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, with only minor vehicle damage sustained.

The road section has since reopened to traffic, with police regulating passage, according to a statement by Yambol Regional Directorate of the Ministry of Interior (MVD) spokeswoman Tatyana Pavлова.

The incident took place under foggy conditions and sub-zero temperatures. The road, part of the republican highway network, had been treated with a sand and salt mixture, according to Galin Kostov, director of the Regional Road Management (ORM) in Yambol. Kostov confirmed that there were two crashes in the same stretch, with vehicles striking each other from the side or outside the designated driving area. Material damage included broken headlights and scratched bumpers.

The incident occurred at a point where the speed limit drops from 90 km/h to 50 km/h upon entering Yambol. The first vehicle may have suddenly slowed down, leading to a chain reaction of collisions due to insufficient distance between vehicles in the fog, Kostov suggested.

Every morning, the road maintenance company treats the most risky sections. Ten vehicles are deployed, dispersing a 2:1 salt to sand mixture, Kostov said. Priority is given to the entrance and exit roads of Yambol and the surrounding highways, with other republican highway sections in the region also being treated.

Repairs on the railway overpass at Yambol’s western entrance began yesterday, with all traffic rerouted to the Northern Bypass. Authorities urge drivers to exercise caution, especially in challenging winter conditions.
