Unidentified Drones Surround Dutch Prison, Sparking Security Alert
Vught, Netherlands – In an unexpected turn of events, the Penitentiary Institute (PI) in Vught found itself encircled by a significant number of police officers on Monday evening. The unusual presence was due to the sighting of multiple suspicious drones hovering above the prison complex.
Initial assumptions by the authorities hinted at a possible escape attempt, but a police spokesperson later confirmed this not to be the case. The police took no chances, nonetheless, deploying a substantial force to secure the area. Approximately nine police vehicles, including regional and national units, were present. Officers were equipped with bulletproof vests, and a police helicopter was seen circling the vicinity.
After approximately an hour and a half, the police left the scene, having lost sight of the mysterious drones. The Officer of Duty (OvD) confirmed the sightings, stating that the exact number of drones remains undetermined.
"The safety of the public and the prison is our top priority," the OvD explained. "Vught is a no-fly zone, and the airspace above the PI is constantly monitored. While we cannot maintain a constant presence, we remain vigilant and will escalate our response if needed."
The no-fly zone above PI Vught has been in effect since 2020 and was recently extended until 2025. The municipality has previously stated that this measure is essential for the safety of residents, staff, and visitors.
Among the inmates at PI Vught is the controversial Extra Beveiligde Inrichting (EBI), housing high-risk criminals such as Willem Holleeder and Ridouan Taghi. Taghi, convicted to life imprisonment for multiple murders related to the Marengo trial, has a specially designed solitary unit within the EBI.
The sudden appearance of the drones raised immediate concerns and led to a swift response from law enforcement. As the investigation continues, the authorities remain committed to maintaining security and public safety.
