Ukraine‘s Strategic Victory: Over 38K Russian Casualties in Kursk Operation; 189 Prisoners Return Home
Ukrainian military forces have scored a significant victory on the Kursk front, with General Alexander Syrsky, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), reporting that Ukrainian troops have inflicted over 38,000 personnel casualties and more than 1,000 units of equipment on Russian forces. The heroic actions of Ukrainian servicemen have forced the enemy to maintain a substantial grouping of forces in their territory and redeploy reserves from other sectors, Syrsky stated.
The general also noted that the resilience and bravery of Ukrainian troops have contributed to the release of 189 Ukrainian prisoners of war on December 30. This achievement is partly due to the fact that during the operation on the Kursk direction, the exchange fund has been topped up by more than 700 captured Russian servicemen.
The Kursk operation began in August 2024, marking the first large-scale offensive by Ukrainian forces on Russian territory since the start of the full-scale invasion. Ukrainian troops crossed the border near the city of Belgorod and advanced deep into Kursk Oblast, capturing significant territories and disrupting Russian units’ cohesion.
Over the initial three months of the operation, Ukrainian forces inflicted grave losses on the enemy, with General Syrsky reporting that Russia lost approximately 21,000 soldiers, including over 7,000 killed and 717 taken captive. In response, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine would retain the captured territories until Russian dictator Vladimir Putin agrees to negotiate.
The operation’s strategic implications cannot be overstated, as it compelled the Russian command to abandon plans for an offensive on certain Ukrainian cities. As of January 1, Ukrainian forces had made progress near Kremennaya and in Kursk Oblast.
