Blitar Battles Chikungunya: 22 Cases in Two Months, Health Department Urges Prevention

Blitar has been grappling with a chikungunya outbreak, with 22 cases recorded over the past two months. The affected individuals have received medical treatment, but health authorities are sounding the alarm to prevent further spread, especially during the rainy season.

"We urge the public to be vigilant against chikungunya mosquito bites," said Christine Indrawati, Head of the Blitar Regency Health Department. She advised regular cleaning of outdoor items that can collect water, as they can serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes. "Our efforts focus on eliminating mosquito breeding sites," she added.

The Health Department also emphasized the importance of maintaining hygiene and health to combat the disease. While fogging can kill adult mosquitoes, it does not eradicate their larvae.

Data from the Blitar Regency Health Department reveals a sharp increase in dengue cases. As of November 2024, there have been 1,163 cases, compared to 328 cases in the same period last year. This spike can be attributed to the 3-year and 5-year cyclical nature of the disease.

"Our control efforts are not optimal," Indrawati acknowledged.

To curb the spread of dengue, the Health Department is promoting public awareness through various methods such as source reduction (遍), mosquito repellent use, and larviciding. They are also implementing the ‘One Household, One Jun-tik’ program, where each household has a designated person responsible for monitoring and controlling mosquito breeding.

"There have been 10 deaths this year, which is a low mortality rate compared to the total cases," Indrawati reported. She emphasized the importance of seeking immediate medical attention for those exhibiting symptoms.
