Child Dead and Six Injured in Christchurch House Fire
A residential fire in Christchurch has left one child dead and six other people injured, including one person in critical condition, after flames ripped through a home on Thursday night.
Emergency services were alerted to the property on Whitehall St in the suburb of Mairehau at approximately 8:25 p.m. Upon arrival, four fire crews from the Anzac, Redwood, and Christchurch stations found the building already ablaze.
Casualties and Emergency Response
Police confirmed the tragedy, stating, “Sadly, a child died at the scene.”
In addition to the fatality, six people were transported to the hospital. The injured include two adults and four children. According to police, one person sustained critical injuries, three are in a serious to moderate condition, and two suffered minor injuries.
The scale of the emergency required a significant medical response. St John confirmed the deployment of two operations managers, two rapid response vehicles, and four ambulances. Fire and Emergency NZ crews worked through the night to extinguish the blaze, with the final crew departing the scene just before midnight.
Community Impact
Neighbors described a scene of shock and concern as the emergency unfolded. Noel John Jabiguero, a local resident, reported seeing “heaps of police cars” and smoke while driving home around 9 p.m.
“I drove past, and I saw smoke and stuff,” Jabiguero said, adding that it was “really sad” to learn of the death and that he “didn’t expect this to happen.”
Another neighbor, Surendren Subashchandrabosa, discovered the road blocked upon returning from work. Having previously seen the family out on walks, he expressed deep concern for them.
“I’m just praying for them to be safe,” Subashchandrabosa said, noting he was “so worried” when he learned of the fire.
Investigation and Next Steps
Detective Senior Sergeant Jo Carolan stated that a scene guard was established at the property overnight to preserve evidence.
While the cause of the fire is still to be determined, Carolan noted that the blaze is not believed to be suspicious. A formal scene examination is expected to be carried out today, with police working in coordination with Fire and Emergency New Zealand fire investigators.
As the investigation proceeds, officials may identify the specific cause of the ignition, which could provide further clarity on how the fire started and spread through the home.
