Child’s body recovered from Shariatpur pond, suspect detained

Body Recovered From Pond After Child Goes Missing in Damudya

Police recovered the body of three-and-a-half-year-old Mohammad Swaib from a pond in Shariatpur’s Damudya on 3 October 2026, roughly six hours after he was reported missing, tbsnews.net reported. The child’s body was discovered stuffed inside a sack behind the house of Abu Alam Shikdar in the West Adashan area of Shidalkura union at around 1:30 pm.

Mohammad Swaib was the son of Selim Sardar and Shimuli, local residents. Following the discovery, law enforcement detained a man named Russell Shikdar in connection with the incident, according to police statements.

Family Allegations Point to Neighbour Dispute

Relatives of the deceased child alleged that he was killed due to an ongoing dispute between their family and the neighbouring family of Abu Alam Shikdar. Swaib’s father, Selim Sardar, told tbsnews.net that an argument had broken out between his mother and Abu Alam over a trivial matter on the evening of 2 October.

Selim stated that he went to the market on Saturday morning and found his son missing upon his return. After the family notified authorities, police and fire service personnel initiated a search operation that ultimately led to the recovery of the boy’s body from the pond behind Abu Alam’s property. Selim has demanded a thorough investigation and exemplary punishment for those responsible.

Arrest Made as Police Investigate Circumstances

Tension escalated in the local area following the recovery of the child’s body. Angry residents set fire to Abu Alam’s house before police intervened and detained Russell Shikdar as a suspect. Members of the accused family were not at home following the incident, preventing journalists from obtaining their comments.

Shamsul Arefin, additional superintendent of police for Shariatpur’s Gosairhat Circle, confirmed the detention. “Russell Shikdar had been detained as a suspect and that legal proceedings were underway,” Arefin said, adding that authorities are actively investigating the circumstances of the death and working to identify all individuals involved.
