Rapid Spread of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in China Raises Global Concern
Jakarta, 3 January 2025 – The recently escalating outbreak of the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in China has captured global attention. The virus is spreading rapidly and widely, causing significant jumps in case numbers, particularly in northern China.
The Indonesian Ministry of Health (Kemenkes RI) urges the public not to panic, but to stay alert and maintain good health to prevent the risk of infection. Kemenkes RI spokesperson, drg. Widyawati, MKM, explains that preventive measures such as maintaining a healthy lifestyle, regularly washing hands, and wearing masks in public can help reduce the risk of contracting the disease.
"We have not yet received any reports of HMPV cases in Indonesia," Widyawati clarifies. "However, we advise the public to maintain good health by practicing clean and healthy living. This is crucial to boost immunity and prevent the spread of potentially hazardous viruses."
The Indonesian government continues to monitor the HMPV outbreak situation in China and other countries. Preventive measures include enhancing vigilance at border entry points and screening international travelers arriving with influenza-like symptoms.
"We will continue to coordinate with pertinent authorities to ensure effective preventive measures are in place to prevent the virus from entering Indonesia," Widyawati adds.
HMPV is a virus that causes respiratory infections, with symptoms similar to the common flu, including coughing, sneezing, fever, and shortness of breath. In severe cases, it can lead to complications such as bronchitis or pneumonia.
Although usually harmless to healthy adults, HMPV poses a higher risk to young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems, including those with chronic diseases like diabetes, respiratory disorders, or heart conditions.
Currently, there is no specific vaccine or treatment for HMPV. However, supportive care such as rehydration, fever control, and rest can effectively alleviate symptoms.
The Ministry of Health encourages the public to stay informed about the virus’s developments and emphasizes the importance of community cooperation in implementing preventive measures. If you experience respiratory infection symptoms, consult a healthcare facility immediately.
