Chlapík says Czechs outplayed Finland despite low efficiency

Czechs Outshoot Finland at Nocco Hockey Games

The Czech national ice hockey team earned just one point from their matchup against Finland during the Nocco Hockey Games in Helsinki, according to sport.cz. Despite the host nation outshooting them 41 to 23 and controlling play for the majority of the fixture, the visiting side settled for one point, identical to their Thursday result in Prague against Sweden.

Filip Chlapík converted his first-round attempt during the post-match shootout past Finnish goaltender Emil Saarinen. He could not repeat the finish on his second try after the puck bounced on the ice surface.

Chlapík Assesses the Shootout and Ice Conditions

“My first attempt went according to plan, the second one did not,” Chlapík told sport.cz regarding his shootout performance. “The puck bounced a few times, and thoughts were jumping through my head about what to do with it.”

During the intermission before the shootout, the ice was cleared using rakes rather than deploying the traditional ice resurfacer. Chlapík noted that the unusual maintenance method did not negatively impact the playing surface. “For me, probably good. It is probably the first time I have experienced it, but the difference in the quality of the ice was not that great,” he said to sport.cz.

Process and Performance Evaluation Under New Coaches

The tournament marks the initial outing for the national team under a newly appointed coaching staff. Chlapík emphasized that the squad is currently prioritizing systematic development over immediate tournament standings in November.

“We are going through a process, this is the first tournament under the new coaches, and in my opinion, the performances look decent,” Chlapík told sport.cz. “That is the basic thing for when we are trying to build something. We are getting used to the new system. Overall, we can evaluate the performance positively.”

The forward highlighted that being outshot 41 to 23 by the host nation reflects an effective tactical approach, even if finishing efficiency remains an area for improvement. “I’ve toured the Euro Hockey Tour quite a bit, but frankly I don’t remember us ever outplaying them like this. That’s a positive thing. Efficiency is a second thing,” Chlapík stated to sport.cz.

Upcoming Match Against Switzerland

Defenseman Andrej Šustr stated following the Helsinki fixture that the team must close out the current tournament schedule with a victory against Switzerland rather than relying solely on positive evaluations of their gameplay. Chlapík echoed that sentiment regarding the Sunday schedule.

“We want to fly at the Swiss and win,” Chlapík told sport.cz. “We’ll want to snatch it.”
