A 37-year-old man has been arrested in Christchurch following a series of alleged fuel thefts totaling over $4500.
Details of the Arrest
Police were initially alerted to the alleged offenses on March 3, when a man reportedly filled multiple fuel cans and then left without paying. Following this initial incident, similar reports emerged from across Christchurch, prompting an investigation by the Christchurch police beat team.
Constable Leauga Fuimaono stated that the team identified a suspect after reviewing evidence and conducting inquiries. A search warrant was executed at an address in Burnside, leading to the man’s arrest.
The man appeared in the Christchurch District Court on Wednesday facing 43 charges related to 23 separate incidents of allegedly driving off without paying for petrol. According to Constable Fuimaono, the suspect “made a lot of effort to steal the fuel and cover his tracks by using stolen number plates.”
Police confirmed that the stolen fuel has not been recovered.
