Christmas Crisis: Emergency Services Called After Reindeer Trapped in Fence

In a Unique Holiday Rescue, Firefighters Free Reindeer Stuck in Tennis Court Hedge

Burgh-Haamstede’s firefighters had an unusual call on Wednesday afternoon, one that’s sure to brighten up the holiday season. A reindeer found itself in a sticky situation at a local tennis court, and it wasn’t on Santa’s sleigh.

The young reindeer had attempted to squeeze through a hedge at the Duinwegje tennis court but quickly discovered its hips were too wide for the opening. The concerned local called in the experts, and firefighters arrived to help the stranded creature.

Using a spreader, the firefighters gently bent the spiked fence, creating enough space for the reindeer to wriggle free. Once liberated, the clumsy Christmas Casanova was able to continue on its way, and thus didn’t delay any holiday deliveries.

"Even animals can find themselves in a prickly situation," joked the fire department on their Facebook page, before comparing the incident to a human rescue earlier this year. In August, a man had to be freed from a similar hedge after getting his leg stuck between its sharp spikes.

While not your typical yuletide tale, this unusual rescue serves as a reminder of the diverse calls firefighters respond to, especially during the holidays. It’s also a sweet, if slightly funny, story of a successful rescue, perfect to share with kids during the long, winter nights.

So, this Christmas, as you tuck into your festive feast, spare a thought for the Burgh-Haamstede firefighters, who, among their many other duties, ensure not even our four-legged friends face a Christmas behind bars. After all, Santa wasn’t the only one making special deliveries this holiday season.
