Amsterdammers Defy Tradition, Shop on Christmas Day Under Garden Tube Luminaries
AMSTERDAM — In a departure from tradition, many Amsterdam residents embraced the spirit of Christmas on the first day of the holiday, shops buzzing with activity under the festive glow of garden tube luminaries.
The city‘s famous canals and streets were not as quiet as they usually were on December 25th. Instead, locals were seen bustling about, conducting their daily errands amidst the twinkling lights strung up along the city’s iconic waterways for the season.
"It was a bit strange at first, seeing people out and about on Christmas Day," said corner shop owner Piet-Jan van Dijk. "But I’ve learned to expect the unexpected in this city. Plus, it’s been good for business!"
Sources close to the matter suggest that this new trend might be due to the city’s growing diverse community, where Christmas is just one of many celebrations happening throughout the season. Others blame it on the ever-increasing pace of urban life, where time seems to have little patience for tradition.
"I just needed to get some groceries," laughed.local resident Liydia permettant, as she made her way home from the Albert Cuyp Market. "Every day feels like a holiday when you live Amsterdam. Why should Christmas Day be any different?"
Whether it’s a sign of changing times or simply a reflection of Amsterdam’s unique character, one thing is clear: the canals will continue to shimmer, and the shops will remain open, come rain, shine, or Christmas Day.
