Oscar-winning actor Cillian Murphy and artist Yvonne McGuinness have secured planning approval to transform the historic Phoenix Cinema in Dingle, County Kerry, into a multi-disciplinary arts space, according to a joint statement released by the couple. The redevelopment aims to restore the venue as a cultural hub for the west Kerry Gaeltacht after years of closure.
From Historic Cinema to Modern Arts Space
The ambitious project will retain the building’s core function as a cinema while significantly expanding its infrastructure. According to the planning details, the revamped site will feature a multi-disciplinary performance space, exhibition and rehearsal areas, a bar, a café, a restaurant, artist studios, and a redesigned courtyard.
“Daingean Uí Chúis/Dingle has waited decades for an arts centre, and the Phoenix will provide a much-needed space for community to gather, create and celebrate the unique culture, heritage, and creativity of this special place,” Murphy and McGuinness stated.
The Phoenix Cinema boasts a century-long history serving the west Kerry community before shutting its doors during the COVID-19 pandemic. Rebuilt by the Houlihan family after fires destroyed previous structures on the site in 1921 and 1938, the venue hosted drama, concerts, dances, and performances by notable acts like Rory Gallagher and Dana. Murphy himself has a personal connection to the venue, having attended a screening of his film Perrier’s Bounty there in 2010.
Navigating the Planning Process
Initial planning permission for the arts center was granted by Kerry County Council. However, the project’s timeline shifted earlier this year when several third-party appeals by local residents brought the case to An Coimisiún Pleanála.
Following the recent approval, the couple expressed relief and gratitude. “We’re excited about the opportunities this space will create for both the people of Dingle and the wider Irish arts community,” they said, while also acknowledging the local authority’s backing throughout the administrative process.
