Bolivia‘s Health Ministry Urges Covid-19 Vaccination as Cases Surge

In the first five days of 2025, Bolivia reported 457 Covid-19 cases, leading the Ministry of Health and Sports to urge the public to resume biosecurity measures and get vaccinated against the virus. The minister, María Renée Castro, confirmed that the Omicron and JN.1 variants are currently circulating in the country.

Castro called on the Bolivian people, especially those at high risk such as individuals with underlying health conditions, adults over 60, pregnant women, and healthcare workers, to get vaccinated. She also emphasized the importance of parents ensuring their children are up-to-date with their vaccination schedules.

To prevent the spread of the virus, Castro reminded the public to adhere to basic health protocols, including wearing masks, frequently washing hands, maintaining social distance, using alcohol-based hand sanitizers, and avoiding crowded spaces.

The first week of the year reported cases across several departments: 369 in Santa Cruz, 4 in Beni, 45 in Cochabamba, 15 in Chuquisaca, 8 in Tarija, 14 in La Paz, 1 in Potosí, and 1 in Oruro. One death was reported in Santa Cruz, a person with underlying health conditions who was not vaccinated.

Castro expressed that the best way to protect against the virus is to get vaccinated and continue practicing good hygiene habits. She also emphasized that the vaccination process remains open to all eligible individuals.

As the virus continues to evolve, staying informed and vigilant is crucial. The Bolivian government is committed to keeping its citizens safe and is working tirelessly to provide reliable information and accessible healthcare services.
