The Musical and Conceptual Shift on Wishbone
While Mann’s debut album occupied a singular, isolated shade of blue, Wishbone is constructed entirely on contrast, featuring a luminosity made legible by shadow, according to the artist’s statement. Mann began the project determined to imagine positive outcomes for herself and to believe they were attainable—a decision she describes as frightening. She draws a direct parallel to Marina Abramović’s performance piece Rest Energy, where artist and partner hold a drawn bow and arrow between their bodies, representing total trust and the possibility of ruin in a single gesture. According to Mann, wanting good things and allowing others to want them for you is a risk worth taking.
Behind the Lead Single “News From Home”
The lead single, “News From Home,” acts as a thread connecting a once-home landscape to her adult life, according to Mann. The track explores visiting her hometown while recognizing that she now maintains a wide life of her own with obligations to return to. Musically, producer Fabian Prynn built the arrangement to evoke an old country song, layering haunting percussion, shimmery synth, big skies, and golden-hour imagery.

Prynn is joined on the record by guitarist Kit Mosely, double bass player Marianne Schofield, viola player Owen Spafford, cellist Martin Egidi, and banjo player Tennessee Woodiel. Mann’s prior work has drawn critical praise; reviewer Thomas Blake noted that her debut positioned her as one of the best songwriters in the country.
