The Russian withdrawals, of which approximately 140,000-150,000 troops are involved, have had to be sourced primarily from Ukraine’s battlefronts. Among the most elite units pulled out were the 810th Marine Infantry Brigade from the Poperinchyna direction, as well as several Airborne Divisions (7th, 11th, 76th, 83rd, and 106th) from various Ukrainian fronts. Additionally, the 116th Special Designation Division of the Russian National Guard was redirected from the Volchansk region in the Kharkiv direction.
The redirection of these troops has allowed Russia to establish two operational-tactical groups – the Bryansk and Belgorod groups – totaling around 90,000 troops. Snegirev believes these forces will primarily serve to reinforce the state border, likely drawing further reinforcements directly from the Ukrainian front to the Kursk region.
Moreover, Snegirev emphasized that these deployments have sucked up considerable Russian resources, with the Kremlin pouring a staggering $200 million into bolstering defenses in the Bryansk region alone. Similar outlays are reportedly being made in Belgorod.
The Ukrainian push into Kursk has undeniably succeeded in drawing Russia’s defense focus away from Ukraine’s borders, forcing Moscow to engage in a costly and potentially counterproductive redeployment. This has allowed Ukrainian forces to stabilize their positions on several fronts while hampering Russia’s ability to prosecute its war on Ukrainian soil.
In the span of just a few weeks, Russia’s hefty Kursk gambit has thus become an expensive distraction, potentially altering the balance of power on the battlefield. The implications of this Russian retreat are far reaching, and all eyes are on the frontlines as the conflict continues to evolve.
