A Columbus man died Jan. 15 following a series of events culminating in a single-vehicle crash on the city’s South Side, according to a Columbus police crash report.
Details of the Incident
Lee Gunderson, 46, of the Southeast Side, was driving a 2010 Mitsubishi Outlander westbound on Llewellyn Avenue when the incident began. Witnesses reported seeing Gunderson strike another vehicle at the intersection of Watkins and Lockbourne roads before continuing westbound.
Witnesses followed Gunderson as he traveled on Llewellyn Avenue at 70 mph, more than double the posted 35 mph speed limit. He then veered off the left side of the road and crashed head-on into a concrete barrier near Parsons Avenue at approximately 5:13 p.m.
Police found Gunderson unresponsive and slumped over the center console. Officers and medics attempted life-saving measures, but Gunderson was pronounced dead at OhioHealth Grant Medical Center at 5:50 p.m.
