Columbus State University’s annual Guitar Symposium, now in its 27th year, will welcome back two of its accomplished graduates: Leonela Alejandro ’23 and Dragoș Ilie ’19. The event is scheduled for February 28 and March 1.
A Hub for Guitarists Worldwide
The symposium has grown into a significant event on the Schwob School of Music’s calendar, attracting guitarists and audiences from across the globe. The two-day festival offers guest artist concerts, masterclasses, lectures, and an international competition for musicians ranging from middle school through professional levels.
Dr. Andrew Zohn, the symposium’s artistic director and the school’s Jo & George Jeter Distinguished Chair in Guitar, emphasized the event’s core value: “At its core, the symposium is about connection.” He explained that the guitar, often considered a personal instrument, becomes a shared experience that transcends cultural and generational boundaries.
Alumni Return to the Stage
Alejandro, a 25-year-old native of Puerto Rico, earned a master of music degree at Columbus State in 2023 and has since gained international recognition for her expressive playing. Ilie, 29, from Romania, was a Woodruff Scholar and earned a bachelor of music degree in 2019. The Woodruff Scholarship provides full tuition benefits to outstanding musical talent.
Zohn stated, “Leonela and Dragoș highlight the global reputation of studying at Columbus State’s Schwob School of Music…Their achievements present the strong training and experience they gain here in Columbus before taking their talents worldwide.”
A Diverse Lineup of Performers
In addition to Alejandro and Ilie, the symposium will feature performances by The Kossler Duo – brothers Adam and John Kossler – and Latin Grammy Award-winning guitarist David Russell. The Kossler Duo are known for their polished ensemble playing and creative transcriptions, while Russell is celebrated for his warm tone and deep musical insight.
Zohn noted that the performances will showcase the guitar’s flexibility and expressiveness. The symposium’s competition, arranged by experience level, will provide learning opportunities for musicians of all ages and skill levels.
All symposium events will be held at the Schwob School of Music on the university’s RiverPark Campus in downtown Columbus. Events will also be livestreamed free of charge on the Schwob School of Music’s Facebook and YouTube pages.
