Russian forces launched a multi-pronged assault, employing tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, armored personnel carriers, and ATVs, totaling approximately 50 units of heavy machinery. However, this substantial investment in resources proved inadequate in the face of Ukrainian resilience and tactical superiority.
The encounter resulted in catastrophic losses for Russia, with the equivalent of tens of millions of dollars in equipment burned or otherwise incapacitated. Ukrainian sources confirm over 90 casualties among Russian troops, with 45 categorized as killed-in-action ("two-hundreds") and 53 as wounded ("three-hundreds").
The ongoing operation in the Kursk region is not new, having begun as early as August 2024. Over the course of 8 January, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry reports the successful repulsion of 48 Russian attack attempts in the region. Despite persistent Russian aggression, Ukrainian forces remain steadfast in their defensive and offensive efforts.
