Headline: Norovirus Threatened Christmas Cheer, But Care Home in Haaften Persevered
Article:
In Haaften, the norovirus threatened to dampen Christmas spirits, but residents and staff at care home De Wittenberg found a way to celebrate despite the challenge. The Christmas dinner had to be cancelled, but carols filled the halls on Wednesday, bringing joy to the elderly residents.
Six residents and several staff members fell ill with the norovirus, which causes symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, and fever. Evert van Luttikhuizen, the home’s manager, was quick to implement measures to prevent further spread. "We’re always vigilant here, especially since we know how easily it spreads and how dangerous it can be for vulnerable residents," he said.
Residents understood the need for the precautions, and the home made adjustments to ensure they could still enjoy the holiday. Each resident was allowed to have a family member visit them in their room, where they shared a Christmas meal together. "They found it cozy and delicious," said Ina Buijs, a caregiver at the home.
To boost spirits further, local singers gathered in the hallways to perform Christmas carols. The atmosphere was so touching that one resident was moved to tears, reminded of her youth. Despite the challenges, the home ended the year on a positive note, with residents looking forward to a New Year’s gathering next week. "We’ll make it up to them with a lovely meal," promised van Luttikhuizen.
While the norovirus outbreak was a setback, the home’s experience with the COVID-19 pandemic helped them navigate the situation. "The conversations we had were reminiscent of those during the coronavirus outbreak. We’re glad we could learn from that experience to keep our residents safe," van Luttikhuizen reflected.
This Christmas, while not as planned, was made special by the resilience and creativity of the De Wittenberg care home team, ensuring that their residents could still celebrate the season despite the norovirus threat.
