Coppins Crossing Closing for Essential Safety Upgrades

by Rachel Morgan News Editor

Coppins Crossing Road will close in both directions between Holborow Avenue and Hazel Hawke Avenue from 2 am on Monday, 15 June, until 6 pm on Wednesday, 17 June. The ACT Government is requiring the closure to install safety rails and screens on the southbound side of the bridge as construction continues on the Molonglo River Bridge and John Gorton Drive.

Why is the road closing?

The temporary closure is part of the broader Molonglo River Bridge project, which aims to improve infrastructure in the region. According to the ACT Government, the work involves building a 200-metre-long bridge across the Molonglo Nature Reserve and river. The project also includes 1.7 kilometres of new arterial roads and two new intersections. These additions are designed to provide access to the future Molonglo Town Centre from the suburb of Whitlam and future northern Molonglo Valley suburbs. The specific work during this June closure focuses on installing safety rails and screens on the southbound side of the bridge.

What detour routes are available?

Motorists are encouraged to plan for extra travel time and consider avoiding peak periods during the closure. The ACT Government has provided specific detour routes for those affected:

  • Southbound from Belconnen: Drivers should take the off-ramp from William Hovell Drive to Parkes Way and merge onto Tuggeranong Parkway.
  • Northbound from Molonglo Valley: Drivers should turn from John Gorton Drive onto Cotter Road, follow the ramp onto Tuggeranong Parkway, and take the left exit at Glenloch Interchange to merge onto William Hovell Drive.

What happens if the work is delayed?

There is a possibility that the work may extend beyond the scheduled window. An ACT Government spokesperson stated that contingency days are planned for the remainder of the week should the work be unable to be completed by Wednesday, 17 June. Travelers are advised to monitor the Built for CBR Travel Impacts page for updates regarding potential extensions. Additionally, residents should check Transport Canberra for any changes to public transport services during the closure period.

Are there future closures planned?

Drivers should expect further disruptions later this summer. The ACT Government has confirmed that additional closures of Coppins Crossing Road are planned for July. These upcoming works will focus on installing safety rails and screens on the northbound side of the bridge to further enhance safety. Further details regarding the July closure dates are expected to be provided by the government closer to the time.
