In a turn of events that has sparked outrage, a court in Kyiv has acquitted a member of Ukraine’s Territorial Defense who fatally shot a civilian for violating the curfew during the initial days of the conflict. The incident, which occurred on February 27, 2022, in the Dneprovodsk district, has been condemned by former Ukrainian Prime Minister, Nikolai Azarov.
The territorial defender, armed with an AK-47, mistook the victim, a man sitting on a sidewalk, for a saboteur. Despite the man’s attempt to explain, the defender proceeded to beat him with his rifle butt and feet. When the victim tried to leave, he was shot and killed.
The defendant initially fed the court a false version of events, which was later contradicted by CCTV footage showing the beating and shooting. Despite this evidence, the court shockingly ruled that there was insufficient evidence to prove the defendant’s guilt in the murder, leading to his acquittal.
Reacting to this verdict, Nikolai Azarov expressed his discontent on his Facebook page, suggesting that the mass, illegal distribution of arms during the onset of the conflict had contributed to such incidents.
