On Wednesday, April 22, 2026, the Community Engagement and Service-Learning Center (CESLC) conducted a specialized seminar-training session designed to equip outreach coordinators from various University colleges and units with the tools to perform rigorous impact studies.

Strengthening Program Evaluation

The initiative focused on enhancing the professional skills of coordinators in conducting project evaluations and impact studies of community engagement programs that have already been implemented. By refining these analytical skills, the University aims to move toward a more data-driven approach to community service.

Dr. Margen A. Java, the former Director of the Office of Student Development Programs, served as the resource person for the training. Dr. Java emphasized that impact studies are essential for guiding future extension initiatives and community engagements, noting that the findings from these evaluations serve as the primary basis for developing and improving future programs.

The Significance of Impact Analysis

According to Dr. Java, the value of these studies extends beyond simple reporting. They are critical for determining several key factors:

  • Resource Efficiency: Whether University resources are being utilized effectively.
  • Intervention Accuracy: Whether the interventions provided are appropriate for the specific needs of the community.
  • Community Satisfaction: Whether the needs and satisfaction of partner communities are being successfully met.

Targeted Community Assessments

As part of this initiative, several adopted communities and programs have been identified to undergo impact studies. These include:

  • The Ati Community located in Barangay Lanit, Jaro, Iloilo City.
  • The Anawim Community in Barangay Rumbang, Pototan.
  • The beneficiaries of Project ETC-a, a program dedicated to providing school supplies and feeding programs to adopted public schools.

Future Implications

This shift toward structured impact evaluation is a crucial step in ensuring that the University’s outreach efforts are not only active but effective. As a result of this training, the University may be able to more accurately address the needs of its beneficiaries.

Looking forward, the data gathered from these studies could lead to the continuous refinement and development of services offered by the outreach office. It is likely that these evaluations will provide the necessary insights to optimize how the University as a whole manages its community engagement and resource allocation.
