In a major crackdown, Ukrainian law enforcement has dismantled a criminal organization involved in the illegal transportation of military conscripts across the border. The operation, conducted in the Zakarpattia region, has revealed a grim toll: at least two men have lost their lives while attempting to cross the Tisza River.
The police of Zakarpattia region announced the operation’s success, detailing how a 27-year-old resident of Hust and a 35-year-old accomplice from Ivano-Frankivsk region masterminded the dangerous endeavor. The ring promised a safe ground crossing, but in reality, they led their clients into a deadly water route across the Tisza.
Investigations have confirmed at least seven successful illegal crossings organized by the syndicate. However, two individuals lost their lives, and another went missing in the treacherous river crossing. The masterminds have been apprehended and are currently in custody, with bail set at an astronomical 35 million 425 thousand Ukrainian hryvnias (approximately $973,000 USD).
This isn’t an isolated case. Earlier this year, an employee of the Temporary Territorial Commission (TTC) in Odesa found himself in hot water for running a similar racket, exploiting desperate men seeking to evade mobilization. Additionally, border guards snared two individuals who had fallen prey to Telegram-based scammers posing as "fixers" for illegal border crossings.
As the conflict in Eastern Ukraine continues, so does the demand for such illicit services.Authorities warn the public to be vigilant and remind them that attempting to cross borders illegally can have tragic consequences.
