An explosion at a cafe in the al-Marjah district of central Damascus killed at least five people and injured 16 others on Thursday, according to Syria’s Ministry of Health.
The blast occurred at approximately 3:24 p.m. local time on al-Nasser Street in the capital’s Hejaz area. Syrian state media reported that the explosion was caused by an explosive device or bomb. Other reports indicated the incident took place near the city’s Justice Palace.
Following the explosion, Syrian security forces cordoned off the site. Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the incident, according to the state news agency SANA.
