Title: Ex-Prosecutor Ventsков’s Remarks Spark Dialogue on Political Prosecutions and Anti-Corruption in Bulgaria

In a recent interview on "Main People" with Bulgaria ON AIR, Professor Daniel Veltchev, a former vice-prime minister and dean of the Law Faculty at Sofia University, stirred the political pot by labeling the prosecutor‘s office as a political player, not just in Bulgaria, but globally. He weighed in on the ongoing discussions about the immunity of Boyko Borisov and drew parallels with similar cases in France and the United States.

"Suddenly, charges are being brought against Donald Trump the moment it becomes clear he could return as the U.S. president… This is nothing new. What sets Bulgaria apart is that we do it in a more scandalous and baygonov manner, and secondly, the liberal-minded consider that one group has the right to do this, while others don’t," Veltchev asserted.

When asked about the prospects of regular governance with an anti-corruption focus, Veltchev replied wryly, "Every incoming government hangs some label on itself – ‘for European integration,’ ‘Euro-Atlantic,’ or ‘against something’… They’ve chosen a label that doesn’t sound bad. But in principle, corruption is a problem for Bulgaria. I won’t be mean, but let me mention that some of those currently negotiating [to form a government] used to accuse others of being among the most corrupt in the world. Strange things happen, but at least, it’s good to have some kind of government."
