Darell Hernáiz’s Dream Realized: Balancing National Pride with Oakland A’s Ambitions
MESA, Arizona – For Darell Hernáiz, the opportunity to represent Puerto Rico in the 2026 World Baseball Classic isn’t just a career milestone; it’s a dream years in the making. Just months before a trade to the Oakland Athletics in 2023, Hernáiz envisioned himself donning the Puerto Rican uniform, watching his national team compete in the Classic.
A Childhood Dream Coming to Fruition
“In my head, I was thinking, ‘I seek to be part of the next one,’” Hernáiz recalled. “I told myself, ‘Hopefully I’m in the big leagues and can be part of the next one.’” That “next one” is now within reach, as Hernáiz has earned a spot on Puerto Rico’s roster for the 2026 tournament. Adding to the significance, the group stage will be held at Estadio Hiram Bithorn in San Juan, Puerto Rico – Hernáiz’s birthplace and the city where he spent his early childhood before moving to El Paso, Texas.
“It means a lot,” Hernáiz expressed. “Most of my family still lives there. I’m very proud of it. That was probably my number one dream when I was little. I didn’t even know what the big leagues were. But I knew what the Classic was and what it meant to represent Puerto Rico while living there.”
Navigating a Crucial Spring Training
The decision to participate wasn’t without consideration. Hernáiz received a call from Puerto Rico’s manager, Yadier Molina, during the offseason. While eager to seize this lifelong opportunity, he also recognized the importance of the upcoming spring training with the Athletics. The A’s have a clear opening at third base, and Hernáiz is firmly in contention for the starting role alongside Max Muncy and Brett Harris.
After discussing his options with Athletics manager Mark Kotsay and general manager David Forst – both of whom encouraged him to embrace the opportunity – Hernáiz accepted the invitation. He will remain in Arizona practicing with the A’s until reporting to Puerto Rico’s camp in Florida on March 1st.
“It wasn’t an easy decision,” Hernáiz admitted. “Obviously, I’m competing for a job. But I thought it was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. You’re playing against the best in the world, so I’ll take it one day at a time.”
Potential for Versatility on the Field
Hernáiz anticipates a chance to contribute significantly to the Puerto Rican team. With stars like Francisco Lindor, Carlos Correa, and Javier Báez unavailable for this year’s tournament, Hernáiz could see playing time at shortstop or second base in addition to his primary position at third base.
He’ll be joined on the roster by teammate Carlos Cortés, as well as established players like Nolan Arenado, Heliot Ramos, and Edwin Díaz.
“I feel really good about [our chances],” Hernáiz stated. “It’s bad not to have those three guys. But it will be fun. The way we play, we do it hard and I think we’ll be successful. God willing, we’ll get out of the group and have a good run. Maybe surprise the world.”
Focus on Development and a Strong 2026 Season
Hernáiz is determined to make the most of his time with Puerto Rico, while simultaneously preparing for a strong 2026 season with the Athletics. He impressed the A’s coaching staff with the quality of his at-bats during the second half of 2025 and has continued to refine his swing mechanics this offseason, aiming for more consistent contact and directional hitting.
“I know I can be even better than I showed last year,” Hernáiz affirmed. “I came into the offseason very motivated and I feel good. I worked on all aspects of my game. I’m ready to demonstrate that and hopefully establish myself this year.”
