tv personality Stefano De Martino traded in the studio lights for the humble atmosphere of Secondigliano Prison yesterday, joining inmates and key figures for a heartwarming Christmas lunch organized by the Comunità di Sant’Egidio. The event aimed to spread joy, unity, and hope among those often forgotten during the festive season.

De Martino, dressed casually in a tracksuit and sneakers, blended in with the crowd, dancing, laughing, and sharing meals with approximately 82 inmates. Present at the event were Archbishop Mimmo Battaglia, Comunità di Sant’Egidio’s Antonio Mattone, and other distinguished guests such as Napoli’s Mayor Gaetano Manfredi and key judicial figures.

The lunch echoed the spirit of Dante’s ‘Convivio’, symbolizing knowledge, understanding, and camaraderie. It also served as a reflection of Pope Francis’s recent opening of the Holy Door at Rebibbia. Many inmates, particularly the marginalized and foreigners, appreciated the gesture of inclusion and companionship.

The event was more than a communal meal; it was a metaphor for renewal and transformation. De Martino and Mattone even improvised a sketch inspired by Rai 1’s ‘Affari tuoi’, bringing laughter and mirth to the occasion. There were emotional moments, too, such as when De Martino reconnected with an old neighbor from Torre Annunziata who was now an inmate. The director of the prison, Giulia Russo, expressed her satisfaction with the outcome, highlighting the importance of rehabilitation, reintegration, and redemption.

Cardinal Battaglia left the inmates with an inspiring message, reminding them that "living is the infinite patience of starting over," and that everyone deserves a second chance. The day ended beautifully with a visit from Santa Claus, distributing gifts and treats to all the inmates.

The prisoners weren’t the only ones who benefited from this display of kindness and camaraderie. The dignitaries and organizers undoubtedly left Secondigliano with enriched spirits, reminded of the warmth and love that can be found even in the most unexpected places. Indeed, as Mattone stated, this was more than a prison lunch, it was a beacon of hope – for the inmates and society at large.
