Automotive Warning: Stay Out of the Fog with This Car Feature
Drivers, beware! An seemingly innocuous feature in your car could be putting you in grave danger, especially when visibility is impaired by fog. We’re talking about automatic headlights with dayRunning Lights (DRL) function – and the danger lies in their use in such conditions.
Experts from the Dutch Road Safety Authority (RDW) have issued a stark warning: do not rely solely on DRLs in fog, as they can actually increase your risk of accidents. Here’s why:
-
Reduced Visibility: Fog reduces visibility significantly, making it difficult for other drivers to see your car, even with DRLs on. In fact, the fog can scatter and reflect the light from DRLs, further reducing contrast and impairing your visibility as well.
-
Dazzling Other Drivers: While DRLs make your car more visible to you, they can also dazzle oncoming drivers, especially when fog reduces the distance at which headlights become glare sources. This increases the risk of head-on collisions.
- Legal Implications: Dutch traffic laws actually require turning off your DRLs in poor visibility conditions, such as fog, rain, or snow. Failure to do so could result in fines and even points deducted from your driver’s license.
The RDW recommends that drivers in such conditions switch to their main beam headlights, using the ‘相比之下’ function if available, or manually adjusting the light intensity to match the weather conditions. It’s also crucial to drive at a reduced speed, maintain a larger following distance, and use your fog lights – but only when visibility is severely impaired by fog.
Stay safe out there! Keep this hazard in mind, and share this information with fellow drivers to ensure everyone arrives at their destination safely.
