Bulgaria experienced its wettest December since 2015, according to data from the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH). The deluge, which continued until the end of the month, brought significant amounts of precipitation to various parts of the country.

The NIMH report revealed that the average monthly rainfall was 57.9 liters per square meter, surpassing the previous record of 53.7 liters per square meter, recorded in December 2015. This significant increase in precipitation has led to noticeable changes in river levels and humidity across Bulgaria.

"These amounts are indeed impressive and highlight the importance of weather tracking and forecasting for public safety and infrastructure management," said a NIMH spokesperson.

The heaviest rainfall was recorded in the northern and north-eastern regions of Bulgaria, with some areas receiving over twice the monthly average. This resulted in localized flooding and disruptions to traffic and public transport in certain regions.

However, the overall impact of the rainfall on Bulgaria’s resources and environment remains to be fully assessed. The NIMH has urged the public to remain vigilant and stay updated on weather forecasts as the country enters a typically wetter period.

While the December rainfall was exceptional, it also contributed to the replenishment of Bulgaria’s water resources, which had been depleted in previous years due to prolonged droughts. The NIMH will continue to monitor weather patterns and provide updates on any significant changes in the country’s climate.
