Delta Air Lines is implementing changes to its onboard refreshment policy for economy passengers, resulting in the removal of free snacks and drinks on a portion of its short-haul flights.
Starting Tuesday, the airline will end its free snack and beverage service for economy passengers on flights traveling less than 350 miles, according to reporting from the New York Times. This represents a shift from the previous policy, under which refreshments were not served on flights of less than 250 miles.
Impact on Regional Travel
The policy change will specifically affect several routes within California, including flights between Los Angeles and San Francisco, as reported by KTLA.

According to the New York Times, approximately 9% of Delta’s daily flights will no longer offer refreshment service as a result of this update.
Standardizing the Passenger Experience
While some passengers will lose access to refreshments, Delta is expanding full service to other routes. Economy passengers on flights of 350 miles or more will now be offered a full selection of food and beverages. Previously, some flights under 500 miles received a more limited service with fewer options.
A spokesperson told Fox Business that “Delta is adjusting onboard beverage service to create a more consistent experience across our network.”
The airline confirmed that these changes do not apply to first class passengers, who will continue to receive full service.
Significance and Future Outlook
This move highlights a recalibration of the passenger experience, trading off service on very short hops to provide a more uniform offering on mid-range flights. By raising the threshold for refreshment service from 250 to 350 miles, the airline is effectively redefining the minimum distance required for complimentary economy amenities.
Looking ahead, these changes may lead to a shift in passenger habits on short-haul California routes, as travelers may be more likely to bring their own refreshments. The airline could continue to monitor the impact of these adjustments as it seeks to maintain a consistent service standard across its entire network.
