Uber Driver Karla Patricia Cortés Murdered in Mexico City: Daughter Demands Justice and Recognition as Feminicide

Article:

In a shocking turn of events, Karla Patricia Cortés Cervantes, a dedicated Uber driver, was brutally murdered in the Azcapotzalco municipality of Mexico City on the evening of December 29, 2024. Her daughter, Brisa, has taken to social media to demand justice and recognition of the crime as a feminicide, contradicting the initial classification by the Mexico City Prosecutor’s Office.

Karla’s body was found with a gunshot wound to the head and signs of struggle. The 19:00 hours incident went unreported to Brisa until the early hours of December 30. Upon notification, Brisa and Karla’s partner immediately visited the Mexico City Prosecutor’s Office, where they spent four hours discussing the case with authorities. The following day, Brisa confirmed her mother’s identity at the Institute of Forensic Sciences and began the bureaucratic process to recover the body.

Despite adhering to the prosecutor’s requests, Brisa alleges that the office is attempting to close the case as a simple homicide, refusing to recognize it as a feminicide. In a heart-wrenching social media post, Brisa expressed her despair, "My mom didn’t have an accident, my mom was the victim of an attack on her life. They didn’t just take away my mom’s chance to overcome life’s adversities, they took away my sister and me from the most important thing we have, our life."

Brisa has criticized the lack of follow-up from authorities since the initial interrogation and the absence of a protection protocol for her 15-year-old sister, Ana Gabriela. To cover funeral expenses, Brisa has set up a donation page on social media. She has also called on Uber to take responsibility for the incident.

How the Feminicide Unfolded

On January 3, 2025, journalist Antonio Nieto shared footage of the feminicide on social media. The video shows Karla’s vehicle, a white car with license plate 89F-644, parked outside a building. Movement is visible inside the car before a gunshot is heard. The driver’s body is then seen being dragged out and run over by the vehicle’s rear tires. Authorities have reportedly identified the suspected perpetrator.

Brisa has continued to advocate for justice, demanding that Uber take responsibility and that the crime be officially recognized as a feminicide. Her social media posts have gained significant traction, with many users expressing their condolences and support for her cause.
