Demon Deacons advance past Boston College in penalty shootout

Wake Forest Advances Past Boston College in Penalty Shootout

The No. 3-seeded Wake Forest men’s soccer team advanced to the ACC Tournament quarterfinals Wednesday night, defeating No. 14-seeded Boston College 6-5 on penalty kicks after playing to a 1-1 draw through 110 minutes at Spry Stadium, godeacs.com reported.

Daniel Krueger’s late equalizer in regulation forced the extra periods before the Demon Deacons converted all six of their penalty attempts. Goalkeeper Jonah Mednard entered specifically for the shootout and stopped Boston College’s sixth shooter to secure the victory.

The win moves Wake Forest to 11-4-3 overall and marks the program’s first penalty-kick victory since defeating Clemson in the 2024 ACC Championship match. Head coach Bobby Muuss holds a 14-8-2 record in ACC Tournament matches, having previously claimed tournament titles in 2016, 2017, and 2024.

Late Drama at Spry Stadium Sets Up Extra Time

Boston College broke a scoreless deadlock in the 82nd minute when Dylan Mafong converted a penalty kick to give the visiting Eagles a 1-0 advantage. Wake Forest answered just before regulation expired in the 89th minute.

Senior Jeffrey White forced a turnover from a Boston College defender inside the penalty box and looped a cross to the back post. Krueger finished first time for his second goal of the season, while White recorded his sixth assist to tie for the team lead in points with 14.

Neither side broke the tie through two 10-minute overtime periods despite Wake Forest generating persistent pressure. The Demon Deacons finished regulation and extra time with a 30-12 advantage in total shots, a 12-5 edge in shots on target, and 60 percent of possession.

Wake Forest Converts Six Penalty Kicks to Defeat Boston College

Joel Torbic, Pariss Mitchell, Mason Sullivan, Jose Perez, Tate Lorentz, and Ethan Subachan each converted from the spot for Wake Forest in the shootout. Boston College matched the hosts through the first five rounds before Mednard denied the sixth attempt.

Goalkeeper Owen Barnett started and played all 110 minutes, collecting four saves before yielding the net to Mednard for the shootout. Mednard’s appearance was his first since September 19 against Virginia.

“First off, hats off to the Boston College goalkeeper. Oh my gosh, that was a performance of a lifetime, in my opinion. He made some unbelievable saves,” Muuss said after the match, according to godeacs.com.
