Russia uses drones to drop propaganda leaflets over Ukraine

Ukrainian Forces Intercept Propaganda-Laden Drone Near Kyiv

Ukrainian forces intercepted a Russian drone that was carrying propaganda leaflets over Kyiv, according to Robert Brovdi, commander of the Ukrainian unmanned systems forces known by the callsign “Madyar.” The leaflets contained QR codes, which Brovdi warned were likely a security trap intended to steal personal data or infect smartphones with malware. He explicitly advised the public against scanning these codes.

Authorities Arrest Two Women After Village Unrest

The discovery of the aerial propaganda campaign coincides with recent civil unrest in a village near Kyiv. Reports indicate that local disturbances erupted following unconfirmed claims that individuals were being illegally detained at a local military facility.

Law enforcement authorities arrested two women in connection with the unrest. One of the detainees, Valentīna Moloda, reportedly arrived at the scene dressed as a medic. A court has ordered her to be held in custody for a two-month period while investigations into the organization of the riots continue.

Broadened Russian Aerial Attacks

This specialized drone operation occurred amid a significant escalation in Russian aerial strikes across Ukraine. Russia recently launched a massive assault involving ballistic missiles “Iskander-M” and “KN-23”, anti-ship missiles “Cirkon”, 59 cruise missiles “H-101”, “H-59”, “H-69” and “Iskander-K”, as well as 289 “Shahed”-type drones, including 120 jet-powered drones and drone imitators. Ukrainian defenses neutralized 309 targets during this operation, with the main attack direction being the Kyiv, Kharkiv, Vinnytsia, and Dnipropetrovsk regions.

Recent overnight strikes also targeted energy infrastructure in the Dnipropetrovsk, Khmelnytskyi, Kyiv, Vinnytsia, and Zhytomyr regions. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that hundreds of thousands of families were left without electricity following these strikes. Official reports from the Ukrainian government indicate that in a single week, Russia deployed 1,940 attack drones, more than 1,580 guided aerial bombs, and 44 missiles against various targets, including substations and transmission lines. Zelenskyy emphasized that Moscow is attempting to exploit Ukraine’s shortage of ballistic missile interceptors.

Foreign Mercenaries Join Russian Forces Amid Ceasefire Talks

The intensity of the conflict remains high despite diplomatic efforts. During the summer of 2025, Zelenskyy reported that foreign mercenaries from China, Pakistan, and Africa were fighting alongside the Russian army in eastern Ukraine. While discussions regarding a potential ceasefire have occurred between the White House, the Kremlin, and Kyiv following Donald Trump’s inauguration, those talks have not yet yielded results.

Why QR Codes on Leaflets Pose Security Risks

Why are the QR codes on the leaflets dangerous? According to the commander of the Ukrainian unmanned systems forces, the QR codes are considered an enemy trap. Scanning them risks compromising personal data or allowing malicious software to infect the user’s smartphone.
