Half Norwegian Dennis Nilsen: One of Britain’s Worst Serial Killers
Article:
In an ugly stain on Britain’s criminal history, half Norwegian Dennis Nilsen stands as one of the country’s most notorious serial killers. Born in 1945 to a UK war hero turned gardener and a Norwegian mother, Nilsen’s life took a dark turn, claiming at least 15 lives between 1978 to 1983.
A former serviceman himself, Nilsen’s peculiar obsession with body disposal methods was matched only by his chilling ability to evade suspicion for years. He’d drown victims in his bathtub, break their necks, or suffocate them before meticulously undressing and cleaning their corpses. Some remains were dismembered and burned in the garden, others buried in the backyard, while others still were flushed down the toilet – an act that once caused a blockage.
The ‘Muswell Hill Murderer,’ as Nilsen came to be known, was arrested only after a plumber discovered human flesh in the pipes of his North London home. Nilsen, then 37, confessed to killing 15 men and boys, though the true number may never be known.
Psychologists would later diagnose Nilsen with a ‘couvade syndrome,’ a disturbing urge to identify with pregnant women, along with necrophilia and a psychiatric disorder that made him deeply attach to dead bodies.
Sentenced to life imprisonment in 1983, Dennis Nilsen continues to haunt British criminal annals as a grim testament to the darkest corners of the human psyche.
