This is the potential of ocean energy in Mexico, which, as we’ve seen, boasts abundant reserves of hydrogen energy and is now poised to generate another clean and dependable renewable energy source.

What is Ocean Energy and Why it Matters

Ocean energy, also known as marine energy, is an emerging renewable resource. Countries like France, the United Kingdom, Spain, and South Korea have already initiated projects to harness the power of their seas, with Mexico swiftly following suit.

Mexican researchers, such as those at the Center of Mexican Innovation for Ocean Energy (CEMIE-Océano), are working on innovative projects to tap into the potential of marine currents, among other oceanic resources.

Six main categories of marine energy are currently being explored:

  1. Mareomotriz: Harnessing the power of tidal movements using dams.
  2. Marine Currents: Extracting energy from underwater flows using turbines.
  3. Undimotriz: Generating electricity from wave motion.
  4. Salinity Gradient: Leveraging the difference in density between freshwater and seawater at river mouths.
  5. Temperature Gradient: Utilizing temperature differences between deep and surface waters.
  6. Offshore Energy: Including technologies like floating wind turbines and solar panels installed at sea.

Ocean energy holds significant promise. It is renewable, clean, and potentially abundant in coastal regions like Mexico. However, it also presents challenges. Balancing energy generation with marine ecosystem protection is crucial to avoid adverse effects such as nutrient dispersion or localized climate changes. Additionally, marine infrastructure installation and maintenance costs are higher than other renewable technologies, and administrative changes can disrupt long-term projects in developing countries like Mexico.

Mexico’s Ocean Energy Landscape

Mexico’s geographical profile is ideally suited for marine energy development. The Gulf of California, for instance, is perfect for mareomotriz energy, while the Pacific coast excels in undimotriz energy. Places like Cozumel hold promise for harnessing thermal gradients and marine currents.

CEMIE-Océano has dedicated nearly a decade to researching and developing ocean energy technologies. Their breakthroughs include underwater turbines, biocide-resistant materials, and sargassum-based membranes that could significantly reduce production costs.

Moreover, innovative projects are underway. In Colima, Eco Wave Power México is set to build Latin America’s first commercial undimotriz plant at Manzanillo beach, with an investment of approximately 264 million pesos and the potential to generate 18,200 MWh annually.

This initiative, coupled with the Coahuila solar plant, underscores Mexico’s commitment to sustainability, diversifying energy sources, and harnessing renewable natural resources for a greener future.

However, ocean energy should not replace other technologies but rather complement them. Just as maritime transport plays a specific role in global commerce, ocean energy has a unique role in a diversified energy landscape.
