Tracking Dione and Tethys Across the Disk
Dione, a 10th-magnitude moon, provides a distinct observation opportunity as it skims the northern region of Saturn. While the moon itself stays just clear of the planet’s limb, its shadow transits the cloud tops. Klesman reports that this shadow transit lasts approximately two hours, beginning at the northeastern limb.
For those equipped with video capture technology, the shadow appears shortly after 1:30 A.M. EDT. Simultaneously, observers can track Tethys. Its shadow transit begins near the rings at the eastern limb around 4:00 A.M. EDT. Tethys itself follows with a transit of the disk, though its small size makes it a challenging target against the planet’s bright cloud tops. Because these features are subtle, visual observation is difficult, and experts recommend dedicated planetary imaging setups to resolve the shadows effectively.
Mercury’s Prograde Motion and Visibility
Beyond the Saturnian system, the planet Mercury is reaching a standstill in the constellation Gemini. Klesman notes that the planet is currently transitioning from retrograde to prograde motion, a shift that will eventually lead it into the constellation Cancer by August 8.
Despite its current position, Mercury remains a difficult target due to its magnitude of 2.2 and low altitude above the horizon. To spot the planet, observers should look to the east roughly 40 minutes before sunrise. At this time, Mercury sits only 2° above the horizon. Because the sky brightens rapidly at dawn, binoculars or a telescope are essential for identification. Through optical aid, the planet appears approximately 12% illuminated, though its 10” diameter remains faint against the morning twilight.
