In a remarkable discovery that has captivated scientists, a worker at a limestone quarry in southern England stumbled upon an unusual irregularity that led to the unearthing of a “dinosaur highway” and almost 200 footprints dating back 166 million years. Researchers from the Universities of Oxford and Birmingham revealed this extraordinary find on Thursday.

The discovery, made by a team of over 100 people excavating at Dewars Farm Quarry in Oxfordshire, expands previous paleontological research in the area and sheds more light on theMiddle Jurassic period. The nearly complete footprints provide an unprecedented glimpse into the life of dinosaurs, offering insights into their movement, interaction, and the tropical environment they inhabited.

The “highway” consists of five trackways, each belonging to different dinosaurs. Four of these belong to herbivorous giants, sauropods—likely Cetiosaurus, which could grow up to 60 feet (18 meters) long. The fifth belongs to the formidable Megalosaurus, a carnivore that stood almost 30 feet (9 meters) tall and sported distinctive three-clawed feet. This fearsome predator was the first dinosaur to be scientifically named, nearly two centuries ago.

The intersection of these trackways raises intriguing questions about the potential interactions between carnivores and herbivores. Dr. Emma Nicholls, a vertebrate paleontologist at the University of Oxford’s Museum of Natural History, noted, "Megalosaurus has been known and studied longer than any other dinosaur on Earth, but this new discovery proves there’s still more to learn about this remarkable creature."

This latest find comes nearly three decades after a collection of 40 footprints was discovered in the same quarry, which is now largely inaccessible. Due to the lack of digital cameras and drones at the time, few photographic records exist of this significant discovery. This time, however, the team has/documentation has documented the findings with over 20,000 digital images and 3D models created using drones—ensuring rich data for future research and potentially unlocking secrets about the size, gait, and speed of these dinosaurs.

Professor Duncan Murdock, a geologist at the Oxford Museum, excitement about the level of detail preserved in the prints, stating, "The preservation is so exquisite that we can see how the mud deformed as the dinosaurs stepped in and out."
