Disney+ has canceled the Marvel superhero series Hollywoodreporter after one season, reversing an earlier Season 2 renewal granted in March. Despite critical acclaim and an Emmy nomination for star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Marvel Studios dropped the project, leaving writers released to pursue other work.
The Surprise Reversal and the Fate of Season 2
The reversal comes just months after Disney announced a second-season renewal for the live-action series in March, roughly two months after its debut following its late January premiere. Behind the scenes, plans for the continuation had not yet taken root. According to production sources, a writers’ room for the second installment was never opened, and the show’s writers have since been released to pursue other projects according to Variety.
Showrunner Andrew Guest addressed the abrupt shutdown on Instagram, writing, Marvel has cancelled Wonder Man. So proud of the show we made. So grateful to have worked with Destin Daniel Cretton, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Sir Ben Kingsley. [I] want to thank everyone who watched and all the critics who supported us.
Critical Acclaim and Viewership Numbers for the Freshman Run
The first season earned a 91% critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes alongside an 87% audience score upon debuting its eight-episode freshman run. In her review for Variety, critic Alison Herman noted, Abdul-Mateen and Kingsley make their characters equally ridiculous and romantic, urged on by a motivation more intimate and individual than saving the world.
The series drew 618 million minutes of viewing time for its premiere week in late January according to Nielsen streaming ratings, landing at the number eight position on the streaming top 10 originals chart for the week of Jan. 26–Feb. 1 before falling out of the top rankings the following week as it slipped from the top 10.
Awards Recognition and the MCU Live-Action Pattern
The project also secured major awards attention. Star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II earned an Emmy nomination for outstanding lead actor in a comedy series for his work on the show, making him the only live-action actor to secure an Emmy nod for both a Marvel and a DC project following his previous win for HBO’s Watchmen.
Despite these accolades, the series falls in line with Marvel’s broader history of single-season live-action releases on Disney+. Shows including WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Hawkeye, and Moon Knight concluded after a single season. Only Loki and Daredevil: Born Again have run for multiple live-action seasons on the platform.
Future Prospects for Simon Williams and Trevor Slattery
While the standalone series will not proceed with a second season, the characters introduced in the show may still return. According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, the figures featured in the series could still appear in other Marvel projects in the future.
The series followed Simon Williams, a struggling aspiring Hollywood actor hiding secret superpowers, who crosses paths with veteran actor Trevor Slattery—played once again by Ben Kingsley after previous appearances in Iron Man 3 and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
