Beyond Single Screens: The Expanding World of DisplayPort
Most people recognize DisplayPort as the premium alternative to HDMI on PCs. But while it’s generally the best connection for a computer monitor, there’s far more to DisplayPort than meets the eye. It was designed with scalability in mind, a feature often overlooked by everyday users.
DisplayPort Was Designed to Scale Beyond a Single Screen
From its inception, DisplayPort was envisioned as more than just a point-to-point connection. With ample bandwidth, it theoretically has the capacity to drive multiple displays from a single cable. This capability is known as Multi-Stream Transport (MST). However, most users don’t realize this potential due to the fact that most monitors only have one DisplayPort output.
Monitors supporting MST have a DP out port, allowing connection to the next monitor in a chain. Each monitor extracts its video stream, then passes the rest along.
Daisy-Chaining Eliminates Cable Chaos
Multiple monitor setups can quickly become a cabling nightmare. Daisy-chaining simplifies this by effectively using a single cable. Careful cable management or concealment can make the setup nearly invisible.
Not All DisplayPort Setups Are Created Equal
MST is a DisplayPort feature, but requires explicit hardware support. It was added with DisplayPort 1.2, but not all DP 1.2 graphics cards support it. Newer cards released after around 2013 generally do, but verification is recommended.
The DisplayPort version impacts the number of monitors and resolutions supported. DP 1.2 handles dual 1080p, DP1.4 supports up to three 4K monitors (one at 60Hz, two at 30Hz) and DP 2.1 can handle two 4K screens at 144Hz or three at 60Hz.
If MST isn’t directly supported, MST hubs can be used. These hubs take a single DP or USB-C (with DP Alt Mode) input and split it into multiple outputs, typically three.
It’s a Killer Feature for Laptops and Productivity Rigs
Laptops often lack multiple dedicated display outputs, but frequently include USB-C or Thunderbolt ports supporting DP Alt Mode. MST allows a single cable connection for a multi-monitor setup, streamlining workflows.
HDMI Still Can’t Really Compete Here
HDMI is a strong standard, matching DisplayPort in features and performance for single-monitor setups. However, it lacks a comparable feature to MST. Connecting three HDMI monitors always requires three cables and outputs.
While HDMI may evolve, MST remains a unique advantage of DisplayPort.
