Headline: DPRD DKI Calls for Urgent Tsunami Hazard Mapping in North Jakarta Following BRIN’s Megathrust Quake Warning
Article:
The Jakarta legislative body, DPRD DKI, has urged the provincial government (Pemprov) to promptly conduct a mapping of tsunami hazard zones in northern Jakarta, following a recent study by the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN). The study indicates a potential for megathrust earthquakes that could trigger tsunamis as far as Jakarta.
Wakil Ketua DPRD DKI Jakarta, Ima Mahdiah, emphasized the importance of such mapping to identify high-risk areas and to develop appropriate mitigation strategies. Ima highlighted that along with the mapping, infrastructure strengthening measures should also be promptly executed. These include reinforcing coastal defenses, reviving mangrove ecosystems, and ensuring adequate and safe evacuation routes.
"Ima stated that tsunami hazard mapping needs to be undertaken immediately, followed by mitigation efforts such as reinforcing coastal defenses, reviving mangrove ecosystems, and providing adequate evacuation routes," a reporter noted on Thursday, February 1st.
Ima also stressed the need to fortify early warning systems to ensure swift and accurate dissemination of tsunami threat information, particularly in high-risk areas along the Jakarta Utara coastline. She underscored the importance of public education and evacuation drills to enhance community preparedness.
Ima, who also serves as the Coordinator of Commission A at DPRD DKI, reaffirmed the legislative body’s support for adequate budget allocation for these disaster mitigation programs. She proposed a comprehensive simulation involving related stakeholders such as the Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), the Indonesian National Police (Polri), and the public.
"We at DPRD are open to adequate budget allocation for these mitigation programs, including ensuring the readiness of emergency infrastructure and disaster logistics. A comprehensive simulation involving BPBD, TNI, Polri is crucial to enhance the responsiveness of all parties," Ima concluded.
