Ponzin has been appointed president of the foundation, which for decades, has been dedicated to restoring sight through transplantation, research, and treatment of eye diseases. This foundation is no ordinary sanctuary; it’s an absolute national gem, responsible for two-thirds of the tissue required for transplants across Italy.
Retirement? Not quite
"For now, it’s more of a virtual than a real retirement," Ponzin chuckles. Though retired from administrative duties, he continues to visit patients, gratis, driven by the freedom from economic constraints. "It’s a luxury to follow people with serious problems," he muses.
A love for medicine, born out of serendipity
Ponzin didn’t always envision a life in medicine. At 22, while working as a laboratory technician at Fidia Pharmaceuticals, he crossed paths with Professor Alessandro Bruni. "He was more than a teacher; he was my mentor," Ponzin reflects. Bruni’s influence led Ponzin to pursue medicine, studying diligently while maintaining his job.
From chance encounter to Eye Bank pioneer
Fast forward through the ’90s, Ponzin found himself unemployed after a crisis at Fidia. A chance encounter led him to the Eye Bank, where he began working in the laboratory. From there, he ascended to the directorship, spearheading the bank’s growth from a small operation in Umberto I Hospital to its current acclaim at Hospital dell’Angelo.
The man behind the miracles
Ponzin’s contributions have been instrumental in the Eye Bank’s success. Faced with lengthy waiting lists and increased demand, he swiftly prioritized securing more corneas. His strategic imports from the U.S. have since turned the tables, with Italy now exporting corneas.
A life dedicated to service
Ponzin’s days are filled with early morning routines, study, visits, and international conferences. He finds balance in his passions – music and writing – echoing the sentiment, "A single source of happiness is too risky."
