Viroloog Marion Koopmans waarschuwt Bcoupmans explaining that new outbreaks could happen at any time." alt="Marion Koopmans viroloog pandemie" />

lockdowns, 1.5-meter rules, and night-time curfews still haunt our memories, five years after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. But virologist Marion Koopmans warns that a new pandemic could strike at any time. Koopmans, who was a regular face on television during the COVID-19 crisis, has been warning about future pandemics for some time.

‘Too many surprises with infectious diseases

Koopmans points to recent examples of new strain outbreaks, such as bird flu in the United States, which has now been detected in cattle. "Before that, we saw something that we had never seen before: the worldwide spread of a new variant of bird flu among wild birds," she says. "We are seeing too many surprises with infectious diseases. Then you can’t say: sleep tight, everything will be fine."

The virologist believes that a new pandemic is always lurking just around the corner. "It could happen next month. The difficult thing is that we can’t give a good estimate of the chance. But that there is a chance, and that it will remain so, is evident."

Bezuinigen på pandemische voorbereidheid

During the COVID-19 crisis, it became clear that the Netherlands was not well prepared for what was to come, with shortages of intensive care equipment and protective equipment such as face masks. As a result, for example, major profits were made by companies such as Sywert van Lienden and Co. Now, five years later, the Netherlands seems better prepared, with hospitals having acquired more ventilation equipment and outbreaks being able to be detected earlier through wastewater testing.

However, Minister of Health Fleur Agema wants to cut 300 million from pandemic preparedness, which would also mean cuts in infection control. Koopmans finds this ‘unwise’. "I would love to see that we have learned from where things went wrong, and that we turn that into what we can arrange for the future."

Vaccinatiebereidheid

Koopmans also expresses concern about the willingness to vaccinate in the Netherlands. During the COVID-19 pandemic, trust in the government and vaccines grew. "But if there is less and less use of vaccines due to this kind of controversy, then that is very worrying. After all, the possibility of developing vaccines is potentially one of our most important tools against an outbreak."
