Thousands Flout Sofia‘s New Eco-Zone Ban: Over 3000 Vehicles Fined Daily
Subhead:
City‘s stringent anti-pollution measure fined 3800 drivers in just 24 hours, with daily penalties reaching up to 150,000 levs.
Article:
Sofia’s ambitious eco-zone initiative, launched on December 1, has encountered mass disregard, with over 3000 drivers daily disregarding the city’s ban on old and polluting vehicles in its center. The measure, aimed at reducing air pollution, targets vehicles in categories 1 and 2, as determined by their annual technical inspection.
In its first 24 hours of enforcement on December 2, a whopping 3800 offenders were caught, according to Dimitar Petrov, director of Sofia’s Traffic Management and Analysis Directorate. The city’s network of 90 CCTV cameras tracks vehicle movements and identifies violators.
Impact in Numbers:
- Daily fines: Approximately 150,000 levs, assuming all violators drive personal vehicles.
- Fines in 24 hours (Dec 2): 190,000 levs.
Why the Ban?
Low-emission zones, like Sofia’s, lower concentrations of the three primary air pollutants: fine dust particles, nitrogen dioxide, and ozone. Vehicle eco-categories are determined during annual inspections and can be checked here. Key boundaries remain open: borderline boulevards and residents with ‘blue’ or ‘green’ zone vignettes are exempt.
Expansion Ahead
Sofia’s low-emission zone will swell in 2028, extending its territory and adding category-3 vehicles to the ban list. The ultimate goal? Encourage drivers to ditch their aging polluters.
Communication Gaps
Info deficiency appears to be a driving force behind the high number of offenders. Many unaware provincial drivers arrived in the capital with older vehicles, triggering fines. Sofia Municipality’s communication strategy fell short, launching its announcement just days before enforcement began on December 1.
Fines have started rolling in, with early holiday greetings of 50 levs sent to personal vehicle owners.
