DroidDeck adds Steam Deck controls and frame generation to Android

Steam startup times drop from 31 seconds to roughly six seconds in DroidDeck 0.3.0, bringing Valve’s ARM64 Steam client closer to a native Steam Deck experience on Android handhelds. This update also enables the use of Steam’s Offline mode.

DroidDeck emulates Steam Deck controllers and dual screens

The 0.3.0 release expands how physical hardware interacts with the Steam client. DroidDeck can now expose a handheld’s physical controls directly to Steam as a Steam Deck controller, complete with a functional Quick Access button, gyroscope support, and full Steam Input layout compatibility. For dual-screen devices, the secondary display can be configured to function as virtual Steam Deck trackpads and rear grip buttons. Quick Access menus can also display real-time battery life and estimated charging times, according to notebookcheck.net.

Performance Overlay and Lossless Scaling Integration

A new Steam-style performance overlay tracks CPU and Adreno GPU utilization, clock speeds, temperatures, VRAM usage, and battery statistics across levels one through four. The overlay can also display frame-time data. Another major addition is Lossless Scaling frame generation support. Users can utilize a copy of Lossless Scaling from their own Steam library to target 60, 90, or 120 FPS, with frame generation paced directly against the game’s output. The project does not distribute the proprietary shaders required for this feature, necessitating a separate purchase from the user.

Automatic driver management requires Qualcomm Adreno GPUs

Hardware configuration is streamlined through automatic GPU driver detection, which installs a matched pair of runtime and display drivers, including the project’s own DD-Turnip packages, though advanced users retain the option for manual selection. Hardware compatibility remains strictly limited to devices running Android 9 or newer powered by Qualcomm Adreno graphics. Current requirements specify Adreno 730 or newer, or 8xx-series GPUs, leaving Mali, Xclipse, PowerVR, and Adreno 710 chips unsupported.

Software Architecture and User Reports

One AYN Odin 3 owner reported that MXGP 2021 increased from about 20 FPS on Low settings to 60 FPS on Medium settings following the update, while 30 FPS was reportedly possible in an underclocked mode.
